A mobile mechanic is not a shop replacement for everything. Here is the honest line between what we can do in your driveway and what genuinely needs a lift.
Plenty of mobile mechanic pages imply they can do absolutely anything anywhere. That is not true, and pretending otherwise wastes your time and ours. Here is an honest breakdown of where each option actually wins.
Anything where the car cannot move. This is the clearest case. A car that will not start, has a dead battery, has a flat tire or is overheating cannot be driven to a shop. The conventional path costs you a tow before anyone has even looked at it. A mobile mechanic goes to the car, and in most cases the repair happens right there. Just skipping the tow often pays for the whole visit.
Routine maintenance. Oil changes, brakes, batteries, belts, filters, plugs. None of it needs a lift, and all of it costs you a half day if you do it the traditional way. Drive there, wait or arrange a ride, drive back. A mobile oil change costs you nothing but the appointment.
Pre-purchase inspections. This is the one where mobile is not just more convenient, it is structurally better. A private seller will not drive their car to your chosen shop, and a dealer would prefer you did not ask. A mobile mechanic simply goes to the car, which is the only way a lot of these inspections happen at all.
Fleet work. If you run vans or trucks, every hour at a shop is an hour not earning. Servicing the fleet in your own yard, before or after operating hours, removes the downtime entirely.
Diagnostics. Modern diagnosis is scan tools, meters, smoke machines and knowing how to interpret live data. Almost none of it requires a lift.
We would rather tell you this upfront than have you find out with a van in your driveway.
Some jobs depend entirely on the specific vehicle. A water pump is a straightforward driveway job on an engine where it is belt-driven and reachable from the front, and a significant job on an engine where it sits behind a timing cover. Spark plugs are easy on most four cylinders and a real project on a transverse V6 where the rear bank is under the intake manifold. An alternator is usually accessible, and occasionally buried.
The right answer is to ask before booking. Tell us the year, make, model and the symptom, and we will tell you honestly whether it is a driveway job. We would rather say no in advance than turn up and discover it.
Mobile labour rates are broadly comparable to an independent shop, and usually below a dealer. The real difference is in what the repair costs you overall. Add up the shop version: the drive there, the ride home or the wait, the drive back, potentially a rental, and the hours off work. For a no-start, add the tow. Once those are in the total, mobile is often cheaper outright, and it is almost always cheaper in time.
Where mobile genuinely costs more is a job that needs equipment we do not carry, because then you are paying for a diagnosis and still going to a shop. Which is exactly why asking first matters.
If the car cannot move, or if the job is maintenance, diagnosis, brakes, batteries, charging, cooling, AC or suspension, mobile is the better tool. If the job needs an alignment rack, a tire machine, a lift for something structural, or the engine or gearbox out, you need a shop and we will say so. Ask us and get a straight answer either way.
