Check Engine Light Diagnostics in Orlando

A code is a clue, not a diagnosis. The free code read at the parts store tells you which circuit reported a fault. Our job is to find out why.

Hood up kerbside with diagnostic tools on the engine bay, Bears Mobile Mechanic

Here is the thing nobody tells you about the free code scan at the auto parts counter: a trouble code names a symptom, not a cause. P0171 does not mean "replace the oxygen sensor". It means the engine computer is adding fuel to compensate for something, and that something could be a vacuum leak, a dirty mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump, a leaking injector or, yes, a lazy sensor. Replace the wrong one and you have spent money and still have the light.

How we actually diagnose

  • Pull all stored, pending and history codes across every module, not just the engine
  • Read the freeze frame, the snapshot of conditions at the moment the fault set
  • Watch live data while the engine runs: fuel trims, sensor voltages, misfire counts, temperatures
  • Run targeted tests, smoke testing for vacuum and EVAP leaks, fuel pressure, compression where it matters
  • Confirm the fault with a measurement before we quote a part

That last line is the whole point. Anyone can read a code. Testing the circuit before condemning the part is the difference between a repair and a guess.

What we find most often in Orlando

  • EVAP leaks, very often a gas cap that is not sealing, sometimes a cracked purge line that Florida heat finished off
  • Oxygen and air-fuel ratio sensors that have gone slow rather than dead
  • Misfires from worn plugs or a failing coil, see tune-up and spark plugs
  • Mass airflow sensors contaminated by an over-oiled aftermarket air filter
  • Catalytic converter efficiency codes, which are often the downstream result of a misfire nobody fixed
  • Thermostat and coolant temperature faults, see cooling system service

Solid light or flashing light

A steady light means get it looked at soon, and it is safe to drive in the meantime if the car feels normal. A flashing light means an active misfire pushing raw fuel into the exhaust, and every minute of driving risks the catalytic converter. Flashing means park it. That is one of the situations a mobile mechanic is built for, because we come to the car rather than you risking the drive.

You get the findings in writing

When we are done you get the codes, what we measured, what we concluded and why, and a price to fix it. If the honest answer is that the repair is larger than the car is worth, we will tell you that too. And if the car will not start at all rather than just running badly, start at no-start diagnosis instead.

FAQ

Check Engine Diagnostics questions.

Yes, that is a core part of what we do. We bring professional scan tools, a smoke machine and meters to your driveway or office lot. Very little of real diagnostic work needs a lift.

Because they read the code, they did not test anything. The code points at a circuit. Diagnosis finds the cause. Paying once to know beats paying twice for parts that were not the problem.

If it is steady and the car drives normally, usually for a short while. If it is flashing, or if the car is running rough, losing power or overheating, stop driving it.

No. It turns the light off until the computer runs that test again, which is usually a day or two. It also erases the data we would use to diagnose it, so please do not clear it right before we arrive.

Diagnostic time is quoted upfront and is real work. If you go ahead with the repair with us, we tell you exactly how that time is handled before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.
